Kowhai nestles just over the road from the Waipawa River, and sits in a direct line between Dannevirke and Napier. This makes it an easy-to-find alternative if Napier, Hastings or (more often than not) Waipukurau are fogged in.
The field is run by Bruce Worsnop, from his sheep and cattle breeding farm between Tikokino and the Waipawa River.
Except in dire emergencies, it’s advisable to phone Bruce before your arrival, so that sheep may be cleared from the strip. Permanent notam: the sheep are trained to run towards the hill north of the strip, so please take care if you spot any on the river side of the runway.
There is no taxi service, but there is a brilliant pub (the Sawyer’s Arms) just down the road at Tikokino.
You’re sure of a warm welcome at Kowhai, and it’s close to some of the Ruahine Range’s finest tramping routes.
